I just started sketching my comics on 3×5 index cards, there are a thousand blanks in a black plastic box on my desk.
I can scan 3 cards at a time and store them on my Dropbox account so that I can get to them from my laptop, and ultimately the iPad. I just got the iPad camera kit, so that’s a step I might be able to skip. It took me a while to figure out that to get images onto the iPad from the adapter, you have to put the files in a folder called DCIM, and that the filename has to be 8 characters long (not including the extension)?
After that, I import into Manga Studio, filling a page with one of the panels. I have a layer set to blue to clean up the original sketch, a color layer for the shading, and a black layer for the lines. Plus other incidental layers to keep foreground/background things separate.
I could do the layout in Manga Studio (in fact, that’s one of its primary functions), but instead, I save out the individual image-pages as .png files and transfer them to the iPad. There, I use an app called Strip Designer to create the pages and word balloons. I imported the Digital Strip font, but other than that, I just use the defaults.
